This is a set of three different grits of ceramic 2″ x 72″ sanding belts. The quantity of each grit is roughly proportional to how most people will use them. As such, we primarily include 36 grit and 60 grit sanding belts in this kit. Ceramic sanding belts are ideal for heavy stock removal and rough grinding. These ceramic belts are from Deerfos’s top of the line BORA 7 ceramic material jumbo stock.

We generally recommend that step progression for most knifemakers–or at least for most individuals starting out to later deviate from. Most users follow the rough rule of thumb of taking their starting grit and roughly doubling it every step.
Some additional tips:
  • For those grinding a surface 1/8 of an inch or thinner, the 36 grit may be more aggressive than necessary if one grinds all the way to the edge of the desired shape during stock removal. We recommend leaving an 1/8″ or 1/4″ gap and grinding closer at 60 and 120 grit.
  • When grinding bevels, consider using a fresh belt for 36 or 60 grit. Keep half worn belts around for the initial part of stock removal as they have plenty of life and you don’t have less of a chance of unexpected grind lines or depth during the beveling process.
  • For most, 220 & 400 grit aluminum oxide in x weight or in j-flex will finish off the edge after this kit. J-Flex is enjoyed by those who want to sand a contoured surface
  • Consider nonwoven surface conditioning belts to leave a very clean satin finish on bevels. This is great to remove all coarser scratch lines and leave a brilliant satin finish. Surface can be polished with a buffing wheel and compound for a mirror finish after surface conditioning if desired.
