Why use a sanding belt eraser?
- Remove loaded excess material, particularly from soft materials (common in handle materials)
- Great for finer grit belts that typically load before the abrasive grain wears out
- Maximizes cost effectiveness of belts the user already owns
Sanding belt erasers improve the usable life of the sanding belt not by reducing the wear rate of the abrasive grains. For finer grains, 120-180 and finer, it’s often common for sanding shavings of metal to embed themselves between abrasive grains. This embedding of sanded material between abrasive grains is known as loading which can smooth out the belt and prevent sanding prematurely by creating a smooth level surface. The sanding belt eraser, made of soft rubber, is able to remove the embedded grains without damaging the abrasive grains.
How do you use a sanding belt eraser?
Sanding belt erasers are usually held up to a spinning belt grinder and gently pushed into the belt. This rubs off some of the rubber eraser, but it removes the excess loaded material quite quickly. We recommend running a belt grinder as slow as possible to remove the material without excess waste. A variable frequency drive (VFD) can be useful here to slowly pickup speed to see the ideal speed to remove loaded material.
